Exploring MaterialsBinary compounds — a careful first look

Reading time: ~5 min

Two elements — many possible stories

A binary compound contains exactly different elements. That does not automatically tell you how the atoms bond — only that the formula has two element symbols (with possible subscripts).

Table salt involves ionic bonding patterns common in many ionic compounds formed between metals and non-metals. is a simple example of a covalent compound formed between two non-metals — though water is not binary (it has two elements but is famously special in its own right).

Next steps in your syllabus will usually drill names, formulas, and patterns — here the goal is conceptual clarity.
